Garage Door Parts: All About Panel Hinges

What Are Garage Door Panel Hinges?

Garage door hinges are a vital part of the structural assembly of your garage door as they connect the various sections of the door keeping them together. They are available in types according to their location on door sections.

This essential garage door part comes in different styles, sizes, and thicknesses (gauge). Residential garage doors require 14-gauge wide-bodied hinges. Hinges also display stamped numbers from one to ten based on where they are used on your door.

Hinges Numbers Explained

To ensure the correct spacing between panels and that your door perfectly fits between the track and the framework around your garage door opening, you need to purchase the right hinges.

Garage door hinges are identified by engraved numbers on their face. Usually, the hinges in the center of the door are stamped #1 and have a single sleeve. The hinges between the 2nd and 3rd panels will be #2 hinges. Those between the 3rd and 4th panels will be #3 hinges, and so on.

When Is It Time to Replace Garage Door Hinges?

As with any other functional part of your garage door, odd noises while the door opens or closes is a sign that the hinges need to be replaced. Also, if the door has broken hinges or has loose screws or screws that are missing entirely, you may want to replace them as they will cause the door to be unaligned and unstable as it follows the tracks.

When buying hinges for your garage door, verify the engraved number on the face to make sure you get the right hinges. Otherwise, you will end up with incorrect spacing on the side of the garage door, which will eventually deform the door’s guide tracks or damage its panels.
