April is National Garage Organization Month: Get started with 5 steps for cleaning out your garage

Even though there are only six days left in April – National Garage Organization Month – it’s not too late to transform your garage into a clean, organized space where you can actually park your car.

“Homeowners often lament that their messy garages are cluttering their lives,” says Gene Meken, president of GarageTek of Connecticut/Westchester. Maybe that’s why 32 percent of people who have a two-car garage have room to park only one car inside it—and 25 percent don’t park a car in their garage at all (Karen Bookatz, Westchester Magazine).

Well April is here and it’s time to reclaim your garage and turn into something more like this:

Here are a few tips to help you get started cleaning out the one area of your home that can be, well, downright scary when it comes to organization.

1. Empty

Step 1 is easy. Clear your carport/the area in front of your garage and then empty the contents of your garage onto it. Don’t take the time to sort or throw out items yet; that comes later. Just clear out your garage to create a blank canvas.

2. Sort

Now that your garage is completely empty, Country Living magazine editors say the best approach is to pare down and pitch. Start going through the clutter. If the amount of STUFF is just plain overwhelming, start with two categories: 1. Keep and 2. Toss.

3. Donate/throw away

Time to make a couple more piles: donate and throw away. Fill up garbage bags with items you want to donate and toss everything else into the trash can or dumpster.

4. Organize

Now it’s time for the really fun part: organization. First, create zones for items that go together, and if space on the ground is scarce, look up! There are a ton of wall- and ceiling-mounted storage solutions for garages, for bikes, tools, ladders, boxes, you name it.

5. Celebrate!

Depending on how you plan to use your new found space, a new garage door may be in order. And then of course call One Clear Choice at 303-565-6409 to help you find the finishing touch to your organizational masterpiece.
