Two Types of Garage Door Springs

Understanding Extension Springs and Torsion Springs

When you purchase a garage door, the opening and closing system can be operated by either extension or torsion springs. This essential garage door part is the one responsible for counterbalancing the weight of the gate to make it easy to raise and lower of the door.

Extension Springs vs. Torsion Springs

The main difference between these two systems is that the door can be opened and closed either by stretch or torque to particular parts of the door to assist in balancing it.

Extension Springs

Typically used in residential applications, they are usually cheaper to buy, replace, and install. You can find extension springs above the top tracks at each side of the door. This type of spring expands and contracts as the door goes up and down, providing a counterweight to the door and making it easier to operate.

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are secured to a metal shaft above the garage door. These springs counterbalance the garage door by applying torque to the shaft with drums at each end. So, the door slides inside a channel to which the lifting cables are attached. What happens is that the torsion spring unwinds and winds as the door is opened and closed to comprise a balanced system.

To keep your garage door operating smoothly and extend the lifespan of the springs, all you need is to give them a little care. We recommend at lubricating the springs as well as other garage door components a least twice a year.

If you have a broken spring, it is highly advisable not attempt to repair it yourself. Doing so will put you in danger. If you need to repair or replace your garage door spring, contact a certified contractor to help you out.
