9. Ankmar Renaissance 2000 Series Garage Doors
This garage door is on 70% of all homes in the Front Range. While some may say it doesn’t deserve to be in the top 10, we at One Clear Choice feel strongly that this may actually be one of the top 10 best doors in the country for several reasons, starting with durability.
This is a well-designed garage door that provides the elegant look of wood with the durability of steel.
Unlike most wood garage doors that have a stile and rail system that is exposed to the outside elements, the skeleton of this door is interior and covered with one long sheet of hard board.
The benefit of this design is that hardboard naturally stands up to 
elements such as rain, snow and sun. Also, since the sheet is continuous throughout the entire length of the garage door, the door will not warp, bow or rock as traditional wood doors often do.
Since the stiles are interior they are protected from the elements and will not rot. When stiles rot the strength of the garage door is diminished and the door will no longer run properly.
This garage door will look good for years if properly maintained; I have seen 20-year-old renaissance doors look new when freshly painted.
Note: Older Ankmar models of this garage door did have some design flaws:
- Some older models did not use one continuous piece of material to cover the 16’ section. This is easily recognizable by the “J” strip that divides the garage door in the middle in order to hide the seam formed from the two pieces.
- They experimented with steel stiles for about one year approximately ten years ago and quickly discontinued this. Most of the problems we have seen from this model are installation problems and can be corrected. If you have one of these garage doors, please call us immediately at (303) 565-6409 to have the problem fixed. Failure to address the issue can cause serious problems with your door system.
Three-Layer Construction Garage Doors – The Steel Sandwich
The next few garage doors are three-layer construction doors that vary in thickness and material.
Three-layer construction is also called “steel sandwich” because it has an outer shell of steel, then foam insulation, then a steel veneer on the inside, which is what gives the garage door its strength.
